MODPOST #2

SO IT LOOKS LIKE YOU GUYS ARE COOL WITH DR EVENTS. That's awesome. To implement that, we would like to use you as a ~source of inspiration~. In short: got any kind of plots/events you'd like to see? Let's hear 'em! Seven-comment length not mandatory.

I kind of want some long event to happen that involves an attack or haunting or general creepy time over the period of a week or something. Probably it's not a good idea for the middle of summer and it's hard to imagine what if anything would be appropriate given I always picture the DR as the idyllic happy city/suburb from MMD videos, but if dragged out you could get the Voc LiW folk having to work together with the UTAU LiW folk to protect civilians, and give the godmode characters something to wail on, and generally allow a change in circumstance to work off. It might be interesting!... but again, god knows how you'd do it. Maybe we just need some general antagonists up in here rather than relying on a big event, not counting the fifty billion Dead Masters that are gonna drop in a month's time.

... I keep wondering given how much we've fleshed the world out if the bus group should graduate to proper living quarters or keep living like magical hobos. I kind of enjoy the magical hobo thing, but I keep getting tempted by the idea. GUYS?

DR LANDMARKS / POLL

[personal profile] vocaloidiot 2010-07-11 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
... okay I'm gonna put this separate because it's kind of a poll and a subthread rather than an idea.

I think we're not sure as a whole whether the DR is populated or not outside of the characters. It's kind of the elephant in the room because we built the place up by committee but the idea of other people never really came up. So we've either got a fully working town where the characters never really talk to anyone or we've got a ghost town full of Vocaloid and UTAU and we kind of wobble back and forth a bit.

So I reckon it's worth getting opinions on this! Personally, I think it is populated by sort of faceless NPCs - aside from just making more sense logistically since most of the characters couldn't forage if their lives depended on it, it also (ha ha I am on topic after all!) allows for post ideas we haven't really done yet, like someone singing at a crowd, or large events and locations going up without the players having to have a hand in them such as festivals or large-scale buildings or whatever. (See also potential RP aids like DivaLuka's school not needing to be staffed entirely by players, or Haku's bar being rented from NPC Landlord #245, or whatevs. That kind of thing.) They don't ever need specifically talking to or GMmed; just the idea of them there helps open post idea doors.

Y/N/THOUGHTS?

While we're at it, a poll: what landmarks are there / do you want there to be in the DR? What do you think it looks like? etcetcetc. Personally I always envision that one town/suburb that gets used in all the MMD videos.

Random LJRP standbys / crap:

Inability to lie
Kung-fu movie-esque bad subtitles
Stuff to confine people to locations (floodings / blackouts / etc.)
Forced into speaking native language
Fourth walling (i.e. the characters are aware they're in an RP, not just aware of other songs)
Gratuitous reasons to fight things - Fight Clubbing?
VUVUZELAS EVERYWHERE, CHRIST
BossDeath's Chasm starts spewing the odd fantasy trope monster

... but most of these could be confined to a post rather than a series of posts quite easily...

I can't remember what this icon is.

As far as large-scale events go, I think there's two types: mundane and esoteric. Mundane ones are pretty easy, just throw locations or events into the DR that a player on their own wouldn't necessarily post, mostly by saying the NPC Hordes are up to stuff. Stuff like 'for the next week, everything's closed! Good luck finding food' or 'this week there's summer festivals all over' or 'this week it is so impossibly hot. what the hell. go argue over fans and bitch at each other' or 'RIOTS'. Setting a week for stuff like this lets people post with their own reactions and react to it being dragged out rather than a single post. Also then if people miss the initial post they can just make more.

I don't have much in the way of ideas for esoteric posts that could last a long time rather than a single post - but the idea did occur to me that we've got a ready and available source by going 'welp this week the DR appears to have dumped you into [song canon]'.

'welp this week the DR appears to have dumped you into Synchronicity. You're now all hobos living in a horse-drawn carriage.'
'welp this week the DR appears to have dumped you into 1925. The year. You're now seeing everything in sepiatone.'
'welp this week the DR appears to have dumped you into Love Is War. Better find a trench and your commanding officer.'

AND SO ON AND SO ON AND SO ON. The characters from that canon could have a ball, and everyone else could play out adjusting to the place.

I dunno. I guess I just always thought it was a ghost town and the food just, like, appeared and stuff.

I always did imagine it as a ghost town. Which, considering the general size of the place compared to the number of inhabitants, it really is at the moment.

But now that we are getting this place more defined, I think other inhabitants could be a good idea. Even if we don't actually RP their existence, it would be nice to take it as read. Maybe they're really unrefined robots - meant to perform a function like teaching a lesson plan or running a shop, but not much else.

Which could bring up the question of whether or not this whole thing is a hallucination/test by Crypton.

As far as landmarks - well, there's the park, the bus, the maid cafe, the library, Aku no Rin's castle, some sort of residential district, a mall, BD!Miku's crater...

Oh yeah, I mean. They never really have to be played out; we can just assume they're there and just getting on with their daily life, so rather than

BRS: One ice cream please.
Mod: Here you go.

We can just handwave handwave and do

[BRS buys an icecream].

It doesn't really change how any of us would play, I think, it just gives a borderline generic population to play off of.

[identity profile] hesitant-toeto.livejournal.com 2010-07-11 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in another RP that has a regular Academy thing going on - basically, how it works is that on a regular basis, a post is made to the community that is specifically for the school. Posts are made to represent various rooms and/or classes - classes are usually done by the teachers, who set up the specifics of that class - and the students and/or other teachers comment on that class.

Could that work?

Also, something I've always wondered is what happens to the characters who get dropped, at least as far as DR community is concerned. Do they just go home? Have they been kidnapped? Are they being turned into a zombie army that will be unleashed on the DR?

Or are they just around offscreen?

As for other ideas:
-Everyone gets turned into animals
-Body swapping
-Love at first sight - some kind of Valentine's Day event
-Some sort of natural disaster
-People spontaneously losing/gaining powers that aren't in their canon - Magnet!Miku turning into the Queen from Alice Human Sacrifice, Cantarella Gakupo gaining a taste for human flesh a la Conchita or Dark Woods Circus, Toeto marching around like a little general because she thinks she's from LiW...some kind of flipflop.

[identity profile] hesitant-toeto.livejournal.com 2010-07-11 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that works. Not only is it easier on the mods, but it makes the place seem a bit less creepy.

[identity profile] hesitant-toeto.livejournal.com 2010-07-11 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Also...Crypton. Some sort of event involving Crypton. Either angsty and frightening or fluffy and irreverent.

[identity profile] hesitant-toeto.livejournal.com 2010-07-11 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the bus. Granted, Toeto doesn't live on the bus, but I like the bus.

Even if people start moving out, I'd recommend that it be kept for emergency quarters.

I couldn't imagine getting rid of it entirely, yeah. It's just this idea that pops up in my head from time to time.

[identity profile] curry-his-favor.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I always assumed there were NPCs, so that the characters with jobs (such as Sora with his restaurant and Famima Miku) can stay employed off of their business without godmoding other characters. :V

However I also assumed that the NPCs are kind of empty-headed and easy to exploit.

[identity profile] curry-his-favor.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think the dropped characters go home. It makes it easier and more convenient to pick them back up.

However there's also the possibility that Conchita has eaten them.

[personal profile] vocaloidiot 2010-07-12 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I guess so, yeah! Or at least they're normal dudes just goin' about their business, which happens to be [whatever player wants at the time], they don't care and just want their groceries.

Though I always kind of pictures Famiku having a terrifying Walmart-esque cult.

[identity profile] curry-his-favor.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I really like this idea of song canon weeks. ♥

Fair point. Toeto was gone for a while, but it was easy to pick her up again.
